2024 AAMC Conference for Institutional Advancement
Sponsored by the Group on Institutional Advancement
The AAMC Group on Institutional Advancement (GIA) Steering Committee wants your input on what should be presented at the 2024 AAMC Conference for Institutional Advancement, April 10-13 in Boston. This annual conference is the only professional development conference designed exclusively for alumni relations, communications, development, marketing, and public affairs professionals in academic medicine.
We look forward to your contributions. Submit a proposal to share your successes, lessons learned, future directions, promising or best practices, collaborations, or solutions to community-wide issues.
This year, you have the option to submit a—
Concurrent session proposal: A blend of peer learning—such as case studies, panel or small group discussions, or simulations—generally targeted toward specific disciplines and involving audience interaction. These sessions run for 1 hour.
Deep-dive session proposal: Longer sessions for the in-depth development of skills featuring high levels of interactivity. These sessions run for 2 hours.
Session topic idea proposal: A session topic of import to the institutional advancement community—tell us what it is, why it matters, and who might be an effective presenter for it. Session topic ideas will be considered by the Steering Committee after concurrent and deep dive session proposals are reviewed.

Consultants, non-AAMC member organizations, and commercial organizations staff must present in conjunction with an AAMC member institution staff member. Proposals must specify which AAMC member institution will participate in the session and provide the name and contact information for that co-presenter. Please note that consultants and commercial representatives are not permitted to speak at the conference unless they are approved exhibitors.
Selection Process
The GIA Steering Committee and Discipline Advisory Groups will review all submissions. The reviewers will place higher preference on proposals that are multi-institutional, interactive, and/or collaborative. The GIA Steering Committee reserves the right to consolidate submissions. Additional details can be found here.
The committee also assigns a session facilitator. AAMC staff will follow-up to confirm session details and connect the assigned facilitator with speakers. Speakers must work with the assigned facilitator and AAMC staff to meet session requirements and deadlines.
Speaker Requirements
Before submitting a session proposal, please note our speaker policies. We operate on a peer-teaching-peer model.
- Registration and Attendance: Speakers are required to pay for the conference registration fee, present in person, and attend the entire conference.
- Travel Expenses: Speakers assume responsibility for their own expenses, including transportation and hotel costs.
- Session Selection: The GIA Steering Committee reserves the right to merge and consolidate submissions. All decisions made by the Steering Committee are final.
- Scheduling: Speakers agree to present their session in person during their time assigned by the GIA Steering Committee; the AAMC may not be able to accommodate session scheduling requests.
- Presentation Materials: Speakers agree to provide presentations and handout materials in advance of the conference to the AAMC speaker coordinator.
- Speaker Information: Speakers agree to submit a color headshot and short bio to the AAMC speaker manager prior to the conference for the conference website and mobile app.
- AAMC Health & Safety Protocol for All In-Person Meetings: The AAMC continues to support vaccination for all as a way to reduce the severity of infection, and continues to believe high-quality, well-fitting masks are effective in reducing infection. While we will continue to encourage attendees to be vaccinated and wear masks in all venues, there are likely to be gatherings associated with this conference with people who may not have been vaccinated and we recognize that mask wearing is now optional. Moreover, there have been reported instances of transmission of the COVID-19 virus even among vaccinated people who are not wearing masks (for example, while eating and drinking.) For this reason, attendees should consider and determine for themselves whether they are comfortable with the risks associated with different events (e.g., indoor vs. outdoor, masked vs. unmasked, AAMC-controlled vs. public space).
