2025 SHIFT Reshaping Communities- Call for Entries
Deadline: January 17, 2025
The SHIFT Architecture Challenge is a biennial Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) program created to highlight the distinct contribution the architectural profession can bring to addressing key societal issues. It aims to showcase the belief that good design and architectural thinking can bring about positive change.
The program invites those with OAA status, and their collaborative teams, to respond to an identified area of concern using their skills and insights. Each edition of this program has a specific theme, having begun with the SHIFT 2019 Infrastructure/Architecture Challenge.
THE 2025 CHALLENGE - RESHAPING COMMUNITIES
The theme for the SHIFT2025 Challenge is Reshaping Communities . Altered climate patterns have heightened the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events in Canada and beyond. While political instability abroad, rapid technological advancements, and social change introduce uncertainty, they also present opportunities and innovative perspectives on how we can ensure people’s needs are met in times of urgency.
The SHIFT2025 Challenge asks the profession to explore how we can develop sustainable solutions that address the challenges posed by climate change and social shifts. From urban revitalization and reconceptualization to adaptations responding to climate change and other emergencies, SHIFT2025 seeks your conceptual—but possible!—architectural ideas for our communities that enable all people to find stability, a sense of belonging, and hope.
Note: As a profession-wide regulator, the OAA strives to remain apolitical and non-partisan in matters local and international. While SHIFT submissions may draw on specifics related to topics both within and outside the province, the goal is to present inclusive ideas for improving people’s experiences in a variety of scales and contexts.
Those SHIFT 2025 submissions selected by a jury comprising architects and other experts will then become the basis of a broader conversation on the issue promoted by the OAA, including a book publication, media outreach, and an event at the 2025 OAA Conference in Ottawa in May. Our special jury will be announced soon!
