Welcome to the 2023-2024 ABMS Visiting Scholar Application!


ABMS is now accepting applications for the 2023 - 2024 ABMS Visiting Scholars Program™.


Applicants should give consideration to the impact of their proposed research project on reducing health inequities and contributing to the development of a qualified and diversified workforce. 
 

The ABMS Visiting Scholars Program positions early-career physicians and research professionals as active contributors to and future leaders in health care. The one-year, part-time program supports research priorities of The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Research and Education Foundation:

  • Diagnostic excellence within and across medical specialties. 
  • Adoption of competency-based medical education and assessments across certification programs. 
  • Impact of physician burnout on the health care continuum. 
  • Impact of the clinician-patient relationship on behavioral changes and health outcomes. 
  • Physicians' engagement and impact on multidisciplinary quality improvement and patient safety initiatives. 

Additionally, applicants from the following specialties should align their submissions with one or more of the research priorities of the co-sponsoring member boards: 

  • Advances research priorities of the American Board of Dermatology
  • Advances research priorities of the American Board of Ophthalmology
  • Advances research priorities of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Advances research priorities of the American Board of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery
  • Advances research priorities of the American Board of Plastic Surgery
  • Advances research priorities of the American Board of Radiology  
    • Diagnostic Radiology
    • Interventional Radiology
    • Medical Physics
    • Radiation Oncology
  • Advances research priorities of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery
    • Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery
    • Congenital Cardiac Surgery
  • Advances research priorities of the American Board of Urology

The ABMS Visiting Scholars Program provides opportunities to

  • Conduct research of value to their home institution and the larger certification community.
  • Strengthen research methodologies, data analytics and overcome barriers in consultation with research mentors, scholar peers and alumni, ABMS leaders and subject matter experts. 
  • Develop a robust professional network of national health care thought leaders, from specialty Member Boards, national thought leaders across the medical education curriculum, research mentors, peer and alumni scholars. 
  • Engage with the ABMS Community through participation in ABMS Committee Meetings, Member Board. Executive Forums, ABMS Stakeholder Council Meetings, ABMS sponsored symposia and other professional forums. 
  • Disseminate research nationally across the certification, medical education and quality improvement community. 


Early career physicians, junior faculty, fellows, and residents are eligible as well as individuals holding master or doctorate degrees in public health, health services research, educational evaluation and statistics, public health, health services research, educational evaluation and statistics, public health policy and administration, or other relevant disciplines. Veterans Affairs trainees and staff are also welcome to apply. Visiting Scholars will receive an award of $15,000 to support the direct costs of research and travel expenses associated with program participation.

The ABMS Visiting Scholar Applications must be received by 11:59 pm CT on June 18, 2023. 


Submission Instructions and Guidelines

  1. To begin your submission, select create account.  
  2. Attest to the Cadmium privacy statement. 
  3. Complete all required fields in the contact form.
  4. Create a new submission by entering the name of your research project. 
  5. Complete each required task: 
    • Applicant Demographics
    • Research and Project Information
    • Abstract Summary, Research Background and Personal Statement
    • IRB Status, Project Timelines and Budget
    • Supporting Application Documentation (uploads)
    • Permission Statement, Scholar Research ID and Feedback
  6. To save your progress on a task, you must scroll to the to the bottom of the page and click continue. You will be directed to your submission home page; make sure to click save on the upper right corner. 
  7. Review your submission.
  8. Click Submit (you may edit your application up to the deadline, 11:59 pm CT, June 18). To get back into your partial submission, login to your Cadmium account and select your pending application.
